Developer 1047 Games extended the game’s open beta as it works to increase server capacity. Splitgate, a sci-fi competitive first-person shooter that’s like a cross between Halo and Portal, was set to launch proper in July on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. But 1047 Games delayed Splitgate’s launch to August because the open beta was so popular. 2 million people downloaded Splitgate’s crossplay open beta in just two weeks, which caused server issues....

Meanwhile, it is steadily ending support for a selection of its games, making the company’s offerings a much leaner dish for consumers (and perhaps potential buyers?). In his recent New Year’s letter, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda stated 2023 will be a year of “major evolution and transformation” for the company, with “multiple blockchain games based on original IPs under development” at this time. Some of these, Matsuda noted, have already been announced, while others will be unveiled at a later date....

Project Athia, a new narrative-driven adventure developed by Luminous Productions, was first revealed during Sony’s big PlayStation 5 broadcast last year, giving players a glimpse of its mysterious be-caped protagonist and gorgeous fantasy world. Now, as part of its spring showcase event, Square has shared a smidgeon more information on Project Athia, giving a name to both its protagonist and the game itself. In Forspoken, players will take on the role of Frey Holland - played by Ella Balinska - who Square Enix describes as an “ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive” in a “beautiful yet cruel world”....

It’s not exactly that, obviously, but to my surprise, placing Star Trek characters into an RPG like this works. Character quirks translate into abilities pretty well, as combat sees you trade blows with Romulans, Klingons and other notable factions during a series of away missions. Battles are simple but snappy affairs - each encounter takes 30 seconds to a minute to complete - and though you can brute force your way through a fair amount of them, things get interesting when you explore its range of buffs and status effects....

This latest Next Fest - which marks the indie-focused event’s ninth outing since its debut as The Game Festival back in 2019 - features “hundreds” of playable demos, alongside a “oodles” of developer livestreams scheduled to run for the duration of the event. The wireless retro controller is available exclusively through the Nintendo store. However it’s showing as sold out in the UK store, while the US store specifies “more controllers will be available in 2022”. The Mega Drive / Genesis equivalent controller remains in stock in the US, but is not yet available in the UK. The controllers were released alongside the Nintendo Online expansion that includes games from Nintendo and Sega’s older consoles....

It means Arise is the fastest-selling Tales game ever, and the first to hit 1m copies in under seven days. Bandai Namco announced the milestone on Twitter today, and shared a celebratory image of the game’s characters Alphen and Shionne. Meanwhile, fans of the franchise are celebrating Tales of Arise hitting the mainstream - with some calling it the series’ long-awaited breakthrough moment after 17 mainline games to date. Tales of Arise launched last week after a record five-year wait from the last all-new Tales game, Berseria, in 2016....

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a collaboration between Dotemu - the publisher behind Streets of Rage 4 and Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap - and developer Tribute Games, which created the excellent Flinthook and Mercenary Kings. It promises to take Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello on a “breathless tour of iconic TMNT locations” - from the sewers of New York City to Dimension X - that pits them against the likes of Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, and Shredder....

The final update to Re-Logic’s sandbox game, this release will bring parity of content between all console versions. The launch is on 4th January 2022, with the news announced in a Terraria State of the Game blog post. On why the game is launching early next year despite being almost complete, the post states: “While we are confident in this build, every launch has some bugs, and we just don’t want to put everyone in a situation where there are issues that everyone is powerless to address....

The vibrant music-themed game is already available on Xbox and PC, including Game Pass. It was nominated for a number of end of year awards, as well as featuring in our own Eurogamer Game of the Year list. If you’re yet to play, it follows the surreal adventure of a musician escaping the shadow of his father into… well that would be telling. Donlan described it as “a rush, a conceit, a virtuoso doodle” in his The Artful Escape review, and as Emad Ahmed wrote, there’s magic in spacing out with this game....

Anniversary Edition, which is due out 11th November to tie in with Skyrim’s 10th birthday, includes an all-new batch of creations, outlined in the video below. This new batch includes new quests tapping into Tamriel’s history, Bethesda said. One is Ghosts of the Tribunal. Here, you earn over a dozen new weapons and armours that were in The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Another is The Cause. Here, players encounter the Mythic Dawn, who are trying to form a new Oblivion gate....

The Great War: Western Front, set for launch on PC at some point in 2023, lets you play as both Theatre Commander and Field Commander in a dual-role. Theatre Commander presents turn-based grand-strategy gameplay as you direct the deployment of forces, perform research and manage your resources across the Western Front. Field Commander offers traditional real-time strategy battles in which you direct units, build trenches and assault the enemy. Expect the weather to change as the conflict drags on, with snow and rain affecting artillery performance and unit movement....

This crossover is thanks to the hard work of Speclizer, who used mods from OmegaFantasy to swap out Kratos and Atreus for Joel and Ellie respectively (it was also OmegaFantasy that enabled The Simpsons to tootle on over to God of War last month).
