Star Wars: Squadrons is something of a spiritual successor to LucasArts’ beloved X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. It’s set during the final days of the Galactic Empire, after the events of Return of the Jedi, and sees players engaging in deep space dogfights, both in multiplayer and in a bit of a solo campaign mode. There’s even VR support if you’re appropriately equipped. Eurogamer enjoyed Star Wars: Squadrons when it released back in 2020, awarding it a Recommended badge and describing it as “an immersive space sim that’s dazzling in VR [and] an exhilarating multiplayer experience, even if the story feels pedestrian....

The patch is also interesting in that Respawn Entertainment released patch notes that tell us almost everything we need to know about the technical enhancements. Frame-rates are increased across the board, post-processing quality is improved and resolutions are increased. The actual range of upgrades actually varies from machine to machine for reasons that aren’t quite clear, but we would expect that this has something to do with the capabilities of Sony and Microsoft’s cross-generational SDKs as opposed to the capabilities of the machines themselves....

For a game based on the GameCube originals and the Deluxe collection, it’s interesting to see the series branch out with something new; the addition of guest stars from other franchises. Some of these will arrive as DLC characters at launch and in the weeks following release, while others - such as Sonic, Kazuma and Beat from Jet Set Radio - will be unlockable from the get go. House of Ashes, as befits the Dark Pictures anthology format, offers up a new standalone story with its own particular take on fear. Gone is the nautical horror of the series’ first outing, Man of Medan, and the time-hopping witch-y terror of last year’s Little Hope, replaced by something aiming to be a little grittier based on what’s been shown so far. Set in Iraq, 2003, House of Ashes focuses on a military unit which comes under fire from Iraqi forces in the region of the Zagros mountains....

It’s been a long and eventful road for the System Shock remake, which was originally intended to be a remaster of Looking Glass Technologies’ classic first-person sci-fi horror before ballooning in scope. By the time its Kickstarter commenced in July 2016, it was being referred to as a “reboot” and, after a rocky period of development, Nightdive announced it was putting the project on hiatus after letting “things get out of control”....

An odd year, yes - in nearly 15 years of writing about video games, I can’t remember a quieter 12 months for big ticket triple-A titles, but I also can’t remember a year that’s offered quite so much quality or diversity....

However, these are remasters and while the upgrades are hardly night and day improvements, they are substantial. For starters, Tecmo Koei has stripped out the somewhat dodgy checkerboard rendering from the PS4 Pro version (which possessed issues including obvious aliasing and double-width transparency effects), opting for native resolution rendering on PlayStation 5. Don’t misunderstand us here - checkerboarding can look impressive, but Nioh’s implementation wasn’t particularly good, so the move to native rendering does deliver a boost to image quality you won’t get from back-compat....
