The sale of Square Enix’s western studios - notably Crystal Dynamics and Eidos - was “driven by concerns that the titles cannibalised sales of the rest of the group”, with the company aiming to improve capital efficiency. That sale was merely phase one, with a second phase intended to diversify studio capital structure - the rising cost of development means the publisher needs to be selective with resources, limiting expansion....

That delay means the game will now have an additional seven months’ worth of development time to further test and polish before launch, developer GSC said in a statement today. The creepy first-person game was previously set to debut on 28th April. “Stalker 2 is the biggest project in the history of GSC, and it requires thorough testing and polishing,” the studio wrote, announcing the delay. “We are convinced that development should take as long as necessary, especially in the case of such a project....

At the time of writing, Halo Infinite ranks as the 286th “top game” according to Steam Charts. It bounces up and down around the chart, of course - the highest I saw it hit yesterday was 255th, I think? - but in the last 30 days, its peak concurrent PC count hasn’t even breached 8000 players, even though, at its height last November, it boasted over a quarter of a million....

That’s according to Valve designer Lawrence Yang who, in conversation with IGN, explained the company expects production to “ramp very quickly” as it continues “surmounting” the initial supply chain issues that led to Steam Deck’s delay last year. “Very quickly we’ll be in the tens of thousands [of units produced],” Yang revealed. “By the second month we’ll be in the hundreds of thousands, and beyond that it’ll grow even quicker”....

A script for the film adaptation has been written by Derek Kolstad, creator and lead writer for the hugely-lucrative John Wick franchise. Sega is reportedly keen to replicate the film success of its Sonic the Hedgehog series, and has tapped the same production company, dj2 Entertainment, to now work on Streets of Rage too. Streets of Rage originally launched for the Sega Mega Drive and spawned a trilogy of sequels....

Chihiro Fujioka was interviewed by MinnMax about his life in games, a life that’s included writing Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and working on the Mario & Luigi handheld titles - as well as directing the Nintendo and Square Enix RPG crossover. “I would absolutely love to make one,” said Fujioka when asked about developing a new Super Mario RPG game. “In my career I’ve been involved with a lot of games, and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game if possible....

Flynn’s new outfit is currently making Nightingale, a Victoriana-inspired fantasy survival crafting game which it revealed late last year. Development will now continue, though changes have been made as Inflexion is no longer part of Improbable, the company behind the rather vaguely-defined cloud computing tech SpatialOS. Last month, Improbable announced it was effectively doing a Google Stadia, and quitting internal game development. This left Nightingale’s future in question. Today, Flynn told GamesIndustry....
