Discord server voice chat support launched for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in September, making it possible for users to talk with their friends directly through Discord Voice chats, wherever they may be. Unfortunately, it’s a pretty fiddly process in its current guise. Users first need to link their Xbox and Discord accounts then download the Xbox mobile app to their phone - which must also be linked to a user’s console....

Earlier this week, video producer and editor Gabriel Roland tweeted a picture of their 360 gamerpic as it appears now on modern consoles: tiny. This Pac-Man gamerpic, bought for 80 Microsoft Points in 2006, shrinks with each new console generation as resolutions increase. Most Xbox users updated their gamerpic years ago. Not Roland, though. “With each passing generation, Xbox tries to shame my Pac-Man ghost avatar by shrinking it ever smaller and smaller,” Roland said....

Steam broke the same record a staggering six times last year as an unprecedented number of players were concurrently online as the coronavirus pandemic continued to surge. Before today, the highest concurrent player count seen on Steam was 25.4 million users in early January 2021. Now, according to SteamDB, Valve’s PC platform has hit another record high, with 26,401,443 concurrent users on the service earlier today. As the table below indicates, it shows a growing trend in PC play that sees Valve continue to grow and maintain its userbase....

Consumer protection agencies in 18 European countries have backed the report and called for better regulation of video games. The report uses both FIFA 22 and Raid: Shadow Legends as case studies to demonstrate the “wide arsenal of tricks to push consumers into spending as much time and money as possible exploiting consumers hope to receive the reward despite a miniscule chance and likelihood to do so”. With respect to FIFA 22, the report highlights the allegedly exploitative nature of FIFA Ultimate Team which encourages players to obtain packs using FIFA Points or Coins, the former of which can only be purchased usung real money....

If you ever need reminding how popular Pokémon is, simply type one of the creatures’ names into social media and see how many image results you get. This is true even for Pokémon so far only glimpsed in leaked screenshots from early copies, images of which Nintendo is busy scrubbing from the internet. Fan art created from seeing these leaked images, though, is another matter. For example, this morning I learned the final evolution of Grass-type cat and Scarlet and Violet Starter Pokémon Sprigatito had leaked online after I saw someone on Twitter discussing its design....

I’ll be frank: Miura’s death hit me like a truck. Unfair doesn’t even begin to cover it. I will never know Miura and I envy those who did, but through his work I felt I understood him, at least a little bit. There’s something very teenager-ish about early Berserk. It’s a whole lot of angst and blood and frustration splattered willy-nilly on the page. Yet unused graphics found in the data of DS game Super Princess Peach reveal that, at some point in development, goombas were given different emotions. Lambda Wars is a free standalone multiplayer mod for Valve’s 2010 multiplayer top-down shooter Alien Swarm (which is itself a remake of a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004) set in the Half-Life 2 universe that brings Valve’s first-person shooter masterpiece into the RTS genre. You play as either a commander of the Resistance or as an overlord of the Combine, with both factions including units, abilities, buildings, research and defences....

Things have improved but it’s taken time, as well as one of the most radical overhauls the series has seen behind the scenes. Last December EA announced an all-star management team was being put in place to help get Battlefield back on track, with Vince Zampella bringing his expertise from overseeing the likes of Call of Duty and more recently Respawn’s Apex Legends to manage the franchise, while Halo veterans Marcus Lehto and Alex Seropian are also onboard - Lehto heading up a new studio in Seattle, while Seropian is working at Industrial Toys on Battlefield Mobile....

Ever-chatty Alice creator American McGee noted the game’s return last night following the issues with several of his studio’s games being delisted from Steam over the weekend. It’s not all good news, however. While Alice - whose delisting certainly prompted the lion’s share of the attention - is back, McGee’s other game Grimm is not. ORIGINAL STORY 20/6/22: Alice: Madness Returns has once again disappeared from Steam. Alice’s disappearance will be particularly frustrating for some, as the 2011 game only returned to Steam in February 2022 after a DRM issue saw it removed from sale for almost five years....

As reported by Promobricks (via VGC), an official Lego version of the Atari 2600 console - which initially released as the Atari VCS all the way back in 1977 - complete with distinctive wooden trim, will arrive this August as part of Atari’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Promobricks says the set - not to to be confused with the fan-made submission on Lego’s Ideas website - will include a Lego rendition of the console itself (said to be roughly the size of the 1977 original), a replica of the equally iconic CX40 joystick, plus a cartridge of gaming classic Pitfall!...

But while I’ve long thought Valhalla’s settlement area is one of its most promising features, its potential is never quite fully realised in the base game, and despite it being the focus of this seasonal update, the same is true again here at Yuletide. Nintendo announced the surprise news in this afternoon’s Switch indie showcase. To say we’ve been waiting a while for this sequel would be an understatement. Axiom Verge 2 was already four years in the making when it was announced in 2019, back then for launch in 2020. Since then, understandably, things have taken a little longer, and its release date has been shuffled back a couple of times. Still, today’s release is a very nice surprise....

Crossplay is enabled automatically in the co-op zombie shooter - which is welcome as it’s best enjoyed among human company instead of bots. Not only this allows for split-second decisions to take place smoothly, especially if you’re in voice chat, but it also makes for a more entertaining experience all around. “Exodus” introduces the No-Pats, a multinational armed militia that is engaged in a civil war over the future of the group. The film also confirms that the other main factions of the game will be the United States and Russia. Both states are on the brink of war as the world struggles over resources and surrounding nations have collapsed, while the group of nomads from collapsed nations known as the Non-Patriated (“No-Pats”) appear to have bound together for survival....

Let me make this clear - Bayonetta 3 is a fantastic action game and one that should satisfy fans of the series. Its bombastic set pieces, varied stage design and wildly out of control storytelling all work in tandem to create something uniquely special. However, the game also reveals an aging technology base that crumbles under the weight of its scope and scale. This is a game where it feels as if the entire production is in search of more powerful hardware that has never arrived....

In a regulatory filing issued on 15th January, CD Projekt said a second civil class action lawsuit had been filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California by a law firm acting on behalf of a group of investors. The claim is the same in subject and scope as that disclosed by CD Projekt in December. “The complaint does not specify the quantity of damages sought,” CD Projekt said....
