Last week, Sega hinted it had a big “new project” to share with us this week, teasing that the broadcast would reportedly include appearances from Hiroyuki Miyazaki and Yosuke Okunari. Given the guests, it wasn’t a stretch to presume the secret new project may have something to do with a new Sega retro console - and it turns out that’s exactly what Sega was teasing. It’s set in the new realm of Alletain, and looks very nice indeed. Then there was Valkyrie Elysium, coming to PC, PS4 and PS5. It’s a fresh action RPG in Square Enix’s long-running Valkyrie series, which has elements of Norse mythology. Inspired by Paul Verhoeven’s cult-classic 1997 movie, Starship Troopers: Extermination drops up to three squads of four players onto the front lines amid an Arachnid assault, challenging them to work together to complete objectives, acquire resources, build and defend their base of operations, and finally escape to the extraction zone. There are three classes to choose from - Assault, Support, and Defense, each with their own weapons, equipment, and perks - alongside a base building system that sees players using resources acquired from planetside refineries to construct walls, towers, ammo stations, and various other amenities in an effort to gain the upper hand in battle....

There’s always a risk with remakes, of course, especially remakes of games as cherished as the original Super Monkey Ball - it’s remarkable how strong an emotional attachment you can have to a 20-year-old game about pushing simians in hamster balls around checkerboard courses. Maybe it’s nostalgia getting the better of me, but to these tired old eyes this is a remake that looks demonstrably inferior to the originals; I miss that distinctive chunk of the Sega Naomi era, or details like how the polished sheen of shimmering bonus level floors doesn’t quite have that sparkle....

The Catacombs of Solaris Revisited is incredibly indoors. It’s the most indoors I’ve felt since lockdown began. It’s a free-roaming kaleidoscope, a perspective-shifting maze with no exit and no entrance. As you explore, the shapes of corridors and corners become momentarily apparent, their edges made visible by the patterned walls skewing and stretching as you move around. When you stop or turn, the maze changes. Sections that were once open space become flat textures projected onto solid walls, like Wile E Coyote’s paintings of tunnels, or 3D chalk artworks on the pavement....
