The recently-announced Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown launches into PlayStation Plus on release day, Tuesday, 1st June. The PlayStation 4 fighting game from Sega is of course playable on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility. Also of note: Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown launches on PS Plus and PlayStation Now. It is available to download on PS Plus for two months - June and July - and leaves Plus on 2nd August....

Star Citizen’s exceedingly lengthy development is well-documented, with the game still in alpha over a decade after production began. Alongside its silver jubilee, Story of Seasons is celebrating its latest addition - Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town for the Nintendo Switch. This game was directed by Hikaru Nakano, who has a long history with the series; being part of the development team since the days of Harvest Moon 64 and previously directing the 2020 remake of Friends of Mineral Town. Talking to Eurogamer in a new interview, Nakano explained the series began with “the general idea of not having a fighting game, but one of those peaceful games in which you just move to a farm”, and developed around the idea of “what kind of lifestyle would you live actually if you were working on a farm?...

The legendary fighting game launched in Japanese arcades on 6th February 1991, according to a tweet from Capcom. Street Fighter 2, which established and popularised the fighting game genre, is considered one of the greatest video games of all time. The Super Famicom (SNES) version of the game, which debuted in June 1992, became a megahit that sold 6.3m units worldwide. Street Fighter 2 broke through into the popular culture, with characters such as Ryu, Ken, Guile and Chun-Li appearing in multiple mainstream media over the years, including the ill-fated 1994 live-action movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia....

Below Zero will have been in early access for nearly two and half years by the time May comes around (its predecessor, by way of contrast, was in early access development for slightly longer, at just over three years), and its full launch will see the game make the leap to Nintendo Switch, alongside Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Nintendo Switch supports the GameCube controller via its separate adaptor, and Sunshine was made to be played by the GameCube’s controller - which led people to wonder why it wasn’t possible to play Sunshine as intended. Thankfully, Nintendo has listened - as it did with the introduction of an inverted controls option, which is also now available. But while inverted controls are now available for Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, the GameCube controller support is just for Sunshine....

Expect 50 minutes of announcements from Nintendo, detailing Switch games due in the first half of this year. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate news will also be included - presumably the next character in its new season pass. It’s been a long time since last full Nintendo Direct, which makes tomorrow especially exciting. With Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury launched worldwide, Nintendo’s release calendar now looks very thin. So, what do we expect to hear about for the six months ahead?...
