Earlier this year, Google announced the closure of its beleaguered cloud gaming service, stating it aims to have all refunds completed by 18th January 2023 - the date Stadia servers are switched off for good. Now, the Stadia Twitter account has confirmed that those who made their hardware purchases via its Google Store should start seeing their refunds coming in. It requests that anyone expecting a refund to keep an eye on their emails for more details....

Psychonauts 2, the most recent game from Double Fine, was met with overwhelming praise on its release. According to Sony’s latest report, Q2 (from July to September 2021), saw 3.3m PS5 consoles sold. That’s a million more than the previous quarter. In terms of sales, the entire gaming division generated $5.68bn in revenue in Q2, the third best quarter since the launch of the PlayStation 5. The figures show Sony’s gaming division is its most profitable, compared with music or film. By comparison to PS5, 200,000 PS4 consoles were sold in Q2 compared with 1....

1047 Games announced it had closed a third round of funding that brought in $100m for an eye-watering $1.5bn valuation. The developer has now seen more than $120m of investment in the three months since Splitgate’s rise to the mainstream Splitgate, a sci-fi competitive first-person shooter that’s like a cross between Halo and Portal (check out Vikki Blake’s Splitgate review for more), was set to launch proper in July on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5....

Symbiogenesis will launch in spring next year as a browser-based game for PC and mobile, Square Enix announced today, and be a new “franchise” for the company which will use the Ethereum blockchain. Characters from the game will be able to collect as digital art. There’s also an interactive story where players can “untangle a mystery by completing missions”. There’s no explanation of why this incorporates NFTs at all. Symbiogenesis’ story will apparently ask questions regarding the “monopolisation and distribution of resources”, which is definitely something to be thinking about as you swap your planet-burning digital tokens for any of this nonsense....

Square Enix Montréal was one of three studios purchased by Embracer Group as part of a $300m USD deal with Square Enix earlier this year. Following the deal’s completion in August, Embracer now also owns Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal, alongside major IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain. While Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal will keep their existing identities following the Embracer acquisition, Square Enix Montréal has now shaken off the last remnants of its former owner with a new name and new logo, both of which have been detailed in a lengthy post on the developer’s website....
